Google Page Speed

June 5th, 2009

By word Google, you’ve done it again. You’ve given we web folk another simple tool that makes our life easier, and our websites faster. The newest addition to the Google stable of website wonders is Google Page Speed. It’s officially open-source, and works in cahoots with FireFox and FireBug (so you need both those tools to run it).

Page Speed takes Firebug to another level, showing you some really cool stats and facts on your test page. Some of the coolest features are ….

  • CSS Efficiency: It goes as far as advising how many, and which of your CSS rules are either “inefficient” or  ”very inefficient” rules.
  • Unused CSS: Do you have one big, sitewide style sheet? Google Page Speed will tell you the size, the %, AND which selectors are unused on the test page. It’s is a big eye opener when you see how much CSS is load but not necessary.

And there are plenty more worth mentioning, including …

  • Script and Style order
  • Proxy Caching
  • Browser Caching
  • JavaScript Optimisation
  • Image Optimisation
  • DNS Lookups
  • Parallel Downloads
  • and heaps more

Page Speed is a MUST try, so here’s the Google Page Speed download link.

Quick Twitter Tip to fix the Background Bug

June 3rd, 2009

Twitter are having some major issues right now. Alot of Users can’t update their profiles, and alot more can’t get their background image to save/upload/stick. If you’re one of them, try this Quick Twitter Tip that has worked for several accounts I’ve been having problems with.

  1. Go to: Settings > Design > Change background image
  2. Choose your new background image file, but don’t press “Save Changes” (yet)
  3. Swap over to the “Change design colors” tab
  4. Make a change to one of the design settings (even if it’s just retyping the same colour code in the box)
  5. Then click “Save changes” from the Design Settings page

Strange I know. But this has proved successful on at least 5 accounts that are effected by the Twitter BackGround Bug.

Robbie McEwen Crashes out of 2009 Tour de France

May 29th, 2009

Robbie McEwen has had no luck this year. First up he had a sickening crash in Grand Prix de l’Escau, where he literally bounces off the road at 60kph and unbelievably, suffered mostly bruising and battering. This slow-motion video shows it well – Robbie is at the front, just right of centre, behind the yellow flag, in the blue nicks and white jersey. He’s the one that goes down REAL, HARD ….

After watching that crash you’d be forgiven for thinking Robbie’s season was over. But he was training the very next day (on the rollers) which shows just how tuff those little Aussies are. But now it DOES look like his season could be over – he’s most certainly out of the Tour de France.

And the irony is, in this latest stack Robbie didn’t even “hit the deck”. But while it looked pretty harmeless the injury is really bad – which tends to happen when your knee collects a stationary object while you’re traveling at +55kph. And while his post-crash Tweet wasn’t too pessimistic, it’s far from great news.
